WARNING: Do Not Update Your PS3 To Retain the ‘Install Other OS’ Features
Last week, there were reports of a Sony PS3 firmware update that would bring USB mass storage support to your console and probably it seemed there was every reason to go for the update, but…that does not seem a good idea - atleast for the moment...
The PS3 firmware update 3.21 that will go live starting April 1 will no doubt add USB mass storage support to your gaming console, but that comes at the cost of losing “Install Other OS” feature from your PS3 (which was available on PS3s before the PS3Slim).
PS3 users who are not concerned about losing this feature which would otherwise allow you to install Linux-based operating systems, can head forward for the update, but those of you who greased your palms for that very feature, should definitely hold back from updating the device firmware.
Sony describes the remotion of this feature as “security concerns” and updating the firmware will bring a “broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system”.
The PS3 Firmware Update comes with the -Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat.
Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings) Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
