Apple beats Google through iPhone Sales
Scanning through applications using 'Flurry' for analytics reporting, Flurry can detect and count unique devices in the market such as Google Nexus One and Motorola Droids. Because the applications embedded with Flurry have been downloaded to over 80% of all iPhone OS and Android devices, Flurry is able to make reliable estimates about gross handset units of each model sold in the market.
Although Google Nexus One is the most advanced Android handset to date, the launch has been overshadowed by lower than expected sales. Nexus One was expected to do a lot better than all the other Android phones because of its initial hype and the fact that it was Google’s first handset launch.
Recent data analysis form Flurry shows that Nexus One sold 135,000 handsets as oppose to 1 million Generation One iPhone’s sold in the same period after its launch, i.e. 74 Days. Please remember that 74 days is the number of days it took Apple to sell 1 million iPhones after its first launch.
These numbers also include a few thousand free phones that were given to Googlers around the world as part of the Dog food drive. Though it might not be a significant number, it does have an effect when a company ends up selling 135,000 phones only.
The comparison is interesting because the iPhone and Nexus One each represent Apple and Google's first fully branded handsets, respectively. We add the Motorola Droid as a point of comparison in the graph,because it's the fastest selling Android phone to date.
The chart below compares the sales results through each of their respective first 74 days.
The launch dates were:
- iPhone, June 29, 2007;
- Droid, November 5, 2009;
- Nexus One, January 5, 2010.
Inspecting the graph, it's clear that Nexus One sales continue to pale in comparison to iPhone 1G and Motorola Droid, with each besting Nexus One sales by approximately eight times over the same time period.
At the same time, an interesting analysis is that the Motorola Droid edged out iPhone 1G over the first 74 days!
Another thing to note is that the Day 1 pre-order sales of iPad easily crossed those of the Nexus and the Droid. Although it is not a fair comparison it does show the brand value and product popularity Apple enjoys in consumer electronic market.
So are you finally going to order a iPad for yourself?
