A year after Nokia and Skype entered into a partnership, Skype has announced free Skype service for Nokia mobile phones. 'Skype for Nokia' will offer almost the same set of services that the Skype desktop client does.

The company has been experimenting with the free Skype client for about a year and now, finally the Nokia skype versions are available for download. The free client, which will initially work with about 20 phones from the Finnish phone maker, can be downloaded from Nokia's Ovi Store. It will let users make free Skype-to-Skype calls, send instant messages and share files, including photos, via a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection. Users can also use the client to cut costs for sending SMS messages to phones abroad.

Nokia’s touchscreen phones that support Skype include Nokia N97, N97 Mini, Nokia X6, Nokia 5800 Xpress Music and Nokia 5530 while the rest of list is comprised of Nokia E72, E71, E90, E63, E66, E51, N96, N95, N95 8GB, N85, N82, N81, N81 8GB, N79, N78, Nokia 6220 Classic, 6210 Navigator and Nokia 5320.

Research shows that Skype had plans to launch this service for mobile phones as early as 2005, but back then network carriers considered Skype’s VoIP services as a threat and so they kept their distance. But with most of the networks progressing to transform into all-data networks that provide both basic telephony services as well as high speed internet access, Skype could manage hit the mark.

Skype will soon introduce versions of the clients for Symbian smartphones from other manufacturers, including Sony Ericsson, it said. Developing a client for Android is also a top priority, according to company spokesman Paul De Lara, but there is no launch date yet.

Since the Skype client uses a mobile data connection, the use of an unlimited data plan is recommended.
