How to "Hack" your Facebook profile picture

Ever since “hacks” of the new Facebook Profile Photostream were reported over at TechCrunch and Gizmodo this weekend, we’ve been seeing more and more people jump in with unique ideas on their profile pages. Alexandre Oudin’s Facebook page is certainly creating waves.

Now apparently having 400 friends and spending $100 on Farmville is not enough, you got to have a beautiful and unique Facebook profile too. It just shows how creative you are!

Want one for yourself? Curious on how this can be done?

This method literally involves cutting up your picture into pieces. It’s based on the brief technique offered by TechCrunch,
“…
all you have to do is block the other photos you’re tagged in and upload photos to your profile pictures album that are the exact size (yes, down to the pixel) of the display on Facebook and voilà !

Here’s a few directions you can follow to achieve the same:

1. Choose a picture you like for the photostream. You can either have the photostream as an extension of the profile picutre, or a separate image in itself.

2. Use a simple image editing software. Actually any software will do; all you need is to be able to do is crop pictures to a certain pixel size. I used MS Paint and it worked out okay.

3. Resize the dimensions of the picture to be fitted into the photostream to 485 by 68 pixels. This makes it easier to cut it to smaller pieces later.

4. Now, cut this up into 5 smaller images of dimensions 97 by 68 pixels each and save them as individual files. This is the exact size of the photostream thumbnail, so no part of your image would be lost.

5. Upload them onto Facebook, and then tag yourself on them in the reverse order. So the image that has to be displayed in the first box needs to be tagged last.

This might take you a couple of tries but you will eventually get it right.

For ease of use, try to get your hands on Adobe Photoshop. It has a feature where you can cut a picture into desired number of slices (and  sizes), then simply save them! :)
