Azam: Restore Deccan State - Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee Minority Department convener and Medak district in-charge, Mr Mohammed Azam, has demanded that the Union government restore Hyderabad Deccan State which existed during erstwhile Nizam rule.

Speaking to mediapersons here on Tuesday, Mr Azam appealed to the Centre to form 17 districts in Telangana State comprising nine districts of Telangana, Gulbarga, Bidar and Raichur districts of Karnataka, Bheed, Nanded, Aurangabad and Osmanabad districts of Maharashtra. It will be the model state for the whole of India, he added.

Mr Azam recalled that the Fazal Ali Commission, which submitted its report on linguistic States to the Central government, had said that the Nizam State was a model State and it should be allowed to continue. Hyderabad Deccan was a multi-lingual State of Telugu, Marathi and Kannada. Even first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru supported the suggestion of the commission. However, the Seemandhra leaders prevailed upon the Congress high command leading to formation of Andhra Pradesh, he added.

Appreciating the Congress high command for not taking any hasty step to form separate Telangana State, he hoped that the Congress high command would take proper decision at appropriate time on Telangana issue. He said that the Congress and the TDP MLAs did not fight elections on Telangana agenda. Now, the Congress and TDP legislators of the region have resigned forcing re-elections at a cost of several crores of rupees to the government.

Mr Azam demanded that the Election Commission decide whether the MLAs can resign whenever they want. It should not allow the resigned leaders to contest again to the Assembly, he added.
