Why This Kolaveri Di?

The most liked and viewed song of last year and still going strong is not 'Friday' by Rebecca Black. That distinction goes to 'Why this Kolaveri Di' by Dhanush.

The song in a South Indian language (tamil) is now a viral hit has inspired a new kind of "youthspeak" for a generation of Indians raised on Hindi and English.

"Kolaveri," or "Murderous Rage," is written in "Tamglish" -- a street mix of English and Tamil that mostly involves adding a -u sound to the end of English words.

The lyrics are meant to be from a drunk boy who's just been dumped; they poke fun at Tamglish while reveling in its accidental poetry (a sampling: "girl-u heart-u black-u")!

The song lyrics have now become ubiquitous Facebook status updates for young Indians and their American-born counterparts. First-time music director of the movie, 21-year-old Anirudh Ravichander, says, “We have deliberately used the line I am sing song... soup song. ‘Soup’ is slang in Tamil for boys who have been unlucky lovers.

Given the popularity of the song, it does not come as surprise that there are a number of spoofs for the song. What shocks people is the number of views even the spoofs get. The current top rated spoofs are the versions by GigDadMusic, Naveen Nigam (Son of Sonu Nigam) and the R&B version by Arjun.

The song has also inspired apps on the iPhone & Android markets. Infact, one of our own has an app called 'Kolaveri Mix' doing good on the Android market.
